The Scholars Abode is the home and study of the royal scholars and their apprentices. This is where they live, study, research, and relax 
The bigger house is for the royal scholars. They are the custodians of the royal libraries, responsible for researching sciences, engineering, astrology, among many other things. Medicinal knowledge is reserved for the royal herbalist, however. 
The apprentices live in the smaller house, and are responsible for the transcription of crumbling texts and books. They take care of the upkeep of the royal libraries. 
Most importantly, the apprentices assist the scholars in experiments and research. Over time, depending on what fields they excel in, as well as their abilities and personality, the royal scholars will decide their future. Some will stay on as assistants only, but a lucky few will have a specialty picked for them. Those lucky few will have to pilgrimmage to the Sept of Light; the center of studies, research and knowledge, in the whole of the Anechii continent. 
They will spend a decade there, mastering their specialty, before returning to the Scholars Abode. Once returned, they will be an understudy of the scholar with whom they share their specialty. They will work together until the senior scholar passes, and will then take over their duties completely. 
Although well-regarded by nobles and commonfolk alike, the Scholars Abode is humble and simple, comfortable, cozy, a place of respite and research in equal parts.
